Decide whether you need uplift or collection
Carpet removal can mean two different services. One is collecting rolls and underlay that a flooring fitter has already lifted. The other includes removing fitted carpet before taking it away. Explain which you need at the enquiry stage. A collection quote based on ready material should not be compared with a price that includes working through furnished rooms and lifting the old flooring.
List the rooms, stairs and landings involved. Provide approximate dimensions and photographs, then explain whether the carpet is still fixed. Include underlay, gripper strips and other associated material if you want them removed. A clear scope helps the contractor assess labour and waste together, rather than discovering at arrival that the job is larger than a pile of prepared rolls.
Floor area is only part of the cost
Room size helps estimate material, but it does not describe the fixing method or access. A large loose carpet may be simpler to assess than a smaller area of bonded tiles. Thick carpet, several layers and wet material can also affect handling. Tell the provider what you know about the flooring and be clear when the backing or underlying layers are uncertain.
Do not disturb older unknown layers to get a more detailed photograph. If material needs assessment before removal, include that in the planning. The quotation should not assume every floor covering can be lifted as ordinary waste. Clear information about the visible flooring is useful, while investigation of suspect materials belongs with competent people and the appropriate precautions.
Furniture movements add a separate task
A fitted carpet cannot always be lifted while heavy furniture stays in the room. Tell the contractor about beds, wardrobes, desks and other items that may need moving. Explain where they can be placed and whether they are also being disposed of. Moving an item temporarily is different from removing it from the property, and both should be stated in the request.
Avoid assuming a fitter or waste team will move everything as part of its standard price. Check responsibilities before booking. If separate teams are involved, coordinate the sequence so one is not waiting for another to clear access. Do not move heavy furniture yourself merely to reduce the estimate; safe handling and the condition of the property still matter.
Stairs and carrying routes affect labour
Upper-floor flats, shared closes and long garden paths can change the time needed to remove old flooring. Send photographs from the room to the proposed loading point. Include narrow stair turns, lifts, steps outside and any parking restrictions. The distance from the front door to the road may be as relevant as the floor number.
State whether a lift can be used and whether building management needs to approve the collection. Rolled material may not fit through a lift or around a corner in the form you expect. The contractor should decide the handling plan after assessment. Do not cut, bundle or drag awkward material through shared areas based on a guess about what will make collection easier.
Underlay, grippers and condition need declaring
Underlay and gripper strips are not automatically included when a quote simply says carpet collection. Name them, and say whether they remain fixed or have already been removed. Exposed sharp fixings need appropriate handling under the agreed plan. Keep them away from shared walkways and children without trying to carry unsafe bundles yourself.
Tell the provider if the flooring is wet, heavily soiled or affected by pests. Material condition can affect acceptance and handling. Other renovation waste should be listed separately, especially electrical items, paint containers or unknown debris. A carpet collection should not become an undeclared mixed building load on the day, because that can change both the price and the suitable route.
Compare two carpet enquiries
Consider a bedroom where a fitter has left dry carpet and underlay ready for collection, and another where carpet remains fitted beneath a large bed. These are not equivalent jobs. The second enquiry needs furniture and uplift arrangements in addition to disposal. Send photographs that reveal those conditions, rather than only the floor area in each room.
Ask the provider to identify the assumed preparation in its quotation. If the bed will be removed by another team first, give the agreed date and explain what happens if that stage is delayed. A collection price can then relate to the material that will actually be ready, while a full uplift price can account for the work still needed inside the room.
Compare the agreed total and finish
Ask whether the quote includes uplift, loading, transport, waste handling and any agreed basic sweep. Confirm the total payable and applicable VAT. Subfloor repairs, adhesive removal, replacement flooring and specialist treatment should be clearly separated unless expressly included. The new fitter’s expected starting condition may require work beyond collecting old carpet.
The Waste Removal Company can assess carpet uplift and disposal or collection of prepared material. Send room sizes, photographs, floor level, access notes and the list of associated waste. Include your fitting date so the sequence can be discussed. A specific request gives you a clearer quotation and helps avoid gaps between the carpet-removal job and the preparation needed for the new floor.
